Simple tips for more sustainability in your wardrobe

More sustainability in everyday life: what can you do?

Small steps, big effects! More environmentally conscious shopping, minimising the number of online returns and paying attention to natural materials are the first steps towards a sustainable wardrobe. But it is not only our shop behaviour that you can make a big difference. Small changes in our behaviour pattern e.g. taking care of clothes and shoes, upcycling or repairs, also have a big positive effect.

To help you move forward to a more sustainable wardrobe, we wrote some simple tips together to help you make your own personal contribution to a greener world.

Sustainability in your wardrobe

Pay attention to quality

In a durable wardrobe one thing above all else is decisive: good quality! Poor quality fabrics and poor productions leads to washing out of colour, holes or deformations, which shortens the lifespan of individual fashion items. It is better to invest in durable and high-quality items, it is not only a benefit for the environment, but also for you! It saves you a lot of frustration and spendings for the wardrobe.

Prefer sustainable materials

You can also get more sustainability into your wardrobe by choosing sustainable materials. These are mainly natural materials such as linen, organic cotton or hemp but recycled fabrics and fair-trade dyeing methods also contribute to your sustainability rate.

Less energy and water are used to produce the biodegradable substances and they also score points for their airiness.

Choosing basics

Did you know that we buy an average of 60 new garments per year? The problem is: We wear our new garments for a shorter. Sale-buying’s, worn out, not so modern anymore, sorted out – it does not sound very sustainable, right?

With a so-called capsule wardrobe, a minimalist wardrobe, you can counteract the trend. Combining new outfits is easy if you concentrate on the right Basics. Invest in classics that can be combined, in different ways and can be worn during the whole year: A well-fitting blue jeans, a white blouse and a classic blazer are all-rounders, that should be in your wardrobe.

Care about your clothing

The better you take care of your clothes, the longer they will last. You are thinking, "That does not make any differences, right?” Well, it does! You can extend the lifespan of your lovely sweater up to 9 months. This already reduces the harmful impact on the environment by 20-30%!

Care tips in 3 easy steps:

  1. Air out instead of washing: Your clothes will wear out with every wash, but sometimes a little fresh air will help against unpleasant odours.
  2. Follow the instructions on the care label, to preserve the quality, fit and colour of your garments for as long as possible.
  3. Hang up carefully: Use wooden or plastic hangers instead of wire hangers. Wire hangers take up less space, but they can cause holes.

Durability during shopping

Targeted online shopping

Everybody knows that feeling... You are in love with some new pants, but you are not sure which size you need. The logical step: You order everything in two sizes. So far everything is very comfortable. But the other way around, it also means that you always must return a parcel, which of course is not good for our CO2 emissions.

Pay attention to a sustainable shipping

Not all boxes are the same! You can also act environmentally friendly, when you are choosing online stores which are indicating the shipping conditions in advance. In order to protect the environment, GERRY WEBER uses recycled paper (87%) for most of its delivery documents. We also use water-based printing inks that are ecologically degradable. Our cardboard packaging comes from sustainable forestry and is even FSC® certified.

Bring your own bag

Not only online, but also in the stores a change in our consumer behaviour is noticeable. A few years ago, it was normal to get one plastic bag after for free. Nowadays there are charges for the ecologically harmful bags and sustainable alternatives are on the rise.

Whether if it is the good old fabric bag or the fashionable mesh bag: the environmentally friendly carrying options, fit into any handbag and make your shopping greener!
