Tying scarves & shawls

The 14 best techniques for tying scarves.

Oversized giant scarves, colourful scarves and fluffy snoods are the perfect accessories for giving any outfit a special finishing touch. Whether as a splash of colour, a fashionable eye-catcher or to round off your overall look, scarves keep you nice and warm and are also a trendy highlight.

But what is the right way to wear these trend pieces? Wrapped, draped or folded? We show you various styling options so you can showcase your favourite accessories in a new light every day.
Schal binden: European Loop

1. The Parisian knot

Thanks to its simple loop method, this technique can be seen as the mother of all scarf tying techniques. This look is particularly suited to stormy or cold days, because the warm, fluffy scarf sits nice and tight on the throat.

How it’s done:
Simply fold the scarf in half, wrap around your neck and feed the open end through the loop. It can’t slip and the scarf remains exactly where it should be. This is a really quick technique and works great with any winter outfit or spring jacket.
Schal binden: Wasserfall

2. The waterfall technique

Flowing but still securely in place – this variation works best with lightweight scarves made of flowing fabric.
This method looks especially good with low necklines or an open coat. Looks great as a chic everyday style for a shopping trip and a coffee in the city!

How it’s done:
First drape the scarf around your neck with one end shorter than the other, leaving the long end with enough fabric to form a large triangle. Then wrap the long end around your neck and tuck it in, letting the triangle drape down at the front. The scarf can then be gathered a little underneath at the front.
Schal binden: Stewardessen-Look

3. The stewardess look

Smart from top to bottom: that is what we think of when we think of stewardesses, who are always made-up and styled to perfection. Maybe it’s the beautifully knotted square scarf that gives them this famous elegance?

How it’s done:
First take a patterned or plain-coloured scarf and fold it over diagonally from corner to corner. Then roll it up towards the point until you have a long, thin rectangular scarf. Wrap this around your neck twice and knot both ends twice. Pull the knots tight and then let the ends fall loosely to the side. With this elegant scarf look, you can pep up any simple outfit and make a wonderful statement.

4. The headscarf and hip scarf

Who said that scarves are just meant to be worn around the neck? With this variation, you can give your whole outfit a trendy update. No matter if you wrap it around your hips or tie it around your head as a headscarf, the scarf as an accessory can give any look a youthful touch and adds a fashionable note.

How it’s done:
Lay an oblong scarf or folded square scarf around your head and pull one of the ends from upwards through the inner loop – or do the same with the scarf around your hips. The scarf can of course be left a little looser around the hips than it can be on the head. Now there is nothing stopping you from taking a stylish drive through the country or going on a forest walk with the scarf blowing in the wind. This is a must-try!
Schal binden: Der Business-Knoten

5. The business knot

Say goodbye to boring scarf fashion: braid away and blow that meeting away! The braided knot is a great opportunity to make your office or business look a little more elegant. It looks especially great with a chic blazer or an elegant skirt suit.

How it’s done:

This sophisticated scarf not technique is perfect for warmer spring days.

How it’s done:
Fold the scarf down the middle. Then drape the scarf over your wrist, forming a loop on one side and leaving the ends hanging loosely on the other. Then pull the ends through the loop around your wrist. The loose part of the scarf once again hangs loosely down at the bottom. Then lift up your wrist and drape the ends around your neck, then pull them through the loop, which is still around your wrist.

The scarf is now in the perfect shape and cannot slip.

Scarves don’t always have to be trendy and hip – elegant scarves can also be very smart and serious with the necktie knot! The masculine-style necktie knot looks particularly good with feminine skirt suits or loosely knotted as a style contrast alongside a cotton T-shirt, boyfriend jeans and high-heel sandals.

How it’s done:
Fold the scarf lengthwise from the outside to the inside. Repeat this step two or three times until the scarf s around 10 to 15 cm wide. Now drape the scarf around your neck and cross the two ends over at chest height. Wrap the upper end around the lower end once, creating a loose loop, then pull it upwards through the neck opening. Now just thread it downwards through the loop you created and pull tight.

11. Making a bag out of a scarf

Scarves are little styling miracles and are so much more than just neck scarves. For example, with just six simple knots, you can transform a scarf into a unique handbag.

How it’s done:
Tie a knot into each of the four corners. Leave each end at least 20 cm long – these are used to create the handles of the bag. Simply tie the two pairs of opposite ends together, this time as close to the ends as possible. Your bag in a trendy bucket style is now complete!

13. Making a top from two scarves

Do you love individuality and a personal touch when it comes to fashion? Then you’ll love this trick: with just two scarves and a belt, you can create your own unique top.

How it’s done:
Place one scarf on top of the other and tie them together at the two top corners. The hole between the knots will be the neck opening. Slip it on over your head. Now drape the two scarves on both sides until you are happy with how they fall. A waist belt fixes everything in place and cinches in the top nicely. Make sure that the two scarves harmonise with one another in terms of colour and material. The front scarf looks particularly good with a trendy pattern!

14. Making a dress from two scarves

You can turn two scarves into a chic dress – we find this technique particularly appealing for holidays.

How it’s done:
Tie the two scarves together at one corner and lay the knot on one shoulder. Wrap the front scarf around your body and tie the two ends together at the back. Tie the two ends of the back scarf at your waist. This creates a unique dress with an asymmetric cut.

Once again, it is important that the materials of the two scarves harmonise well together. And what about colour? Tone-on-tone is elegant, but contrasts make a fashionable statement.
